Models of science dynamics aim to capture the structure and evolution of science. They are developed in an emerging research area in which scholars, scientific institutions and scientific communications become themselves basic objects of research. In order to understand phenomena as diverse as the structure of evolving co-authorship networks or citation diffusion patterns, different models have been developed. They include conceptual models based on historical and ethnographic observations, mathematical descriptions of measurable phenomena, and computational algorithms. Despite its evident importance, the mathematical modeling of science still lacks a unifying framework and a comprehensive research agenda. This book aims to fill this gap, reviewing and describing major threads in the mathematical modeling of science dynamics for a wider academic and professional audience. The model classes presented here cover stochastic and statistical models, game-theoretic approaches, agent-based simulations, population-dynamics models, and complex network models. The book starts with a foundational chapter that defines and operationalizes terminology used in the study of science, and a review chapter that discusses the history of mathematical approaches to modeling science from an algorithmic-historiography perspective. It concludes with a survey of future challenges for science modeling and discusses their relevance for science policy and science policy studies.

Deskresearch is een handleiding voor het zoeken en verwerken van informatie. Door middel van een stappenplan wordt de lezer begeleid bij het opzetten en uitvoeren van literatuuronderzoek. Elk hoofdstuk gaat in op een specifieke fase van het zoeken naar informatie: van het formuleren van de zoekvraag tot de kwaliteit van de rapportage. Drie thema's krijgen speciale aandacht: het bepalen van de informatiebehoeften, het gebruiken van informatiebronnen en het beoordelen van informatie. Tevens is er veel aandacht voor internet als informatiebron en het gebruik van zoekmachines. Deskresearch bevat verschillende praktijkvoorbeelden, vragen en opdrachten waarmee de theorie aan de praktijk getoetst kan worden. In deze tweede editie is de informatie rond zoekmachines geactualiseerd en zijn diverse nieuwe praktijkvoorbeelden toegevoegd. Daarnaast is er aandacht voor het samenstellen van literatuurlijsten met behulp van software en worden er meer informatiebronnen besproken.

Karen Spärck Jones is one of the major figures of 20th century and early 21st Century computing and information processing. Her ideas have had an important influence on the development of Internet Search Engines. Her contribution has been recognized by awards from the natural language processing, information retrieval and artificial intelligence communities, including being asked to present the prestigious Grace Hopper lecture. She continues to be an active and influential researcher. Her contribution to the scientific evaluation of the effectiveness of such computer systems has been quite outstanding. This book celebrates the life and work of Karen Spärck Jones in her seventieth year. It consists of fifteen new and original chapters written by leading international authorities reviewing the state of the art and her influence in the areas in which Karen Spärck Jones has been active. Although she has a publication record which goes back over forty years, it is clear even the very early work reviewed in the book can be read with profit by those working on recent developments in information processing like bioinformatics and the semantic web.
